Japanese Zodiac Compatibility

The twelve animals do not move through the world alone. From ancient triangles of harmony to the clash pairs that spark friction, the 干支 (eto) system offers a nuanced map of how each sign relates to every other.

How Japanese Zodiac Compatibility Works

In the Japanese 干支 (eto) tradition, compatibility between signs is determined primarily by two systems: the Sangoukei — the Three Great Triangles — and the Mitsunari clash axis. The triangles identify groups of three signs that share a fundamental energy and orientation; signs within the same triangle are considered deeply compatible, naturally supportive, and able to understand each other without effort. The clash axis identifies pairs of signs that sit directly opposite each other on the twelve-spoked wheel — these pairings tend toward friction, conflict, and misunderstanding, though with awareness they can be navigated and can even produce dynamic tension that drives both parties forward.

The five elements — Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, and Water — add a second layer of nuance. Each year in the sixty-year cycle carries both an animal sign and an elemental modifier, so two people who share the same animal sign may relate very differently depending on their respective elements. Generally, elements that produce each other (Wood feeds Fire, Fire creates Earth, Earth yields Metal, Metal enriches Water, Water nourishes Wood) support harmonious pairings. Elements that overcome each other (Water extinguishes Fire, Fire melts Metal, Metal cuts Wood, Wood breaks Earth, Earth dams Water) introduce challenge.

The Three Great Triangles

Each triangle groups signs by position on the twelve-year wheel — every fourth sign, forming an equilateral triangle. Signs within the same triangle are said to share core values and a common approach to the world, making them naturally aligned partners in love, friendship, and work.

First Triangle

Rat • Dragon • Monkey

The intelligence triangle. These three signs share a quick-thinking, strategic orientation. The Rat supplies ingenuity, the Dragon brings ambition and power, and the Monkey adds flexibility and wit. Together they form an unstoppable combination — each amplifying the others' mental sharpness. In relationships, this triad produces partnerships that are intellectually stimulating and mutually energising.

Second Triangle

Ox • Snake • Rooster

The persistence triangle. Methodical, disciplined, and deeply patient, these three signs value substance over spectacle. The Ox provides steadiness and endurance; the Snake brings depth, intuition, and quiet power; the Rooster contributes precision, diligence, and a perfectionist streak. Together they build slowly but extraordinarily well, with an instinct for quality and longevity in all they undertake.

Third Triangle

Tiger • Horse • Dog

The courage triangle. Driven by freedom, idealism, and an inborn sense of justice, these three signs are the warriors of the zodiac. The Tiger is bold and pioneering; the Horse is passionate, restless, and independent; the Dog is loyal, principled, and fiercely protective. In each other they find the space to be themselves — they respect each other's need for autonomy and admire each other's conviction.

Fourth Triangle

Rabbit • Sheep • Boar

The sensitivity triangle. These three signs lead with feeling, creativity, and an appreciation for beauty and connection. The Rabbit is gentle, perceptive, and artful; the Sheep is empathetic, imaginative, and peace-seeking; the Boar is generous, sincere, and warmly open-hearted. Together they create relationships of extraordinary tenderness and mutual care, finding in each other the emotional resonance they seek from the world.

The Clash Axis — Signs That Conflict

On the twelve-spoked wheel of the zodiac, each sign sits directly opposite another — and those two signs are said to be in fundamental opposition. This is the clash axis (冲, chong). Clashing signs do not simply fail to connect; they tend to actively irritate, challenge, and frustrate each other. Their core values, pace of life, and fundamental desires often pull in opposite directions. This does not mean such pairings are impossible — sometimes the friction produces extraordinary growth — but it does mean they require more conscious effort and mutual understanding than most.

The Rat and Horse illustrate the pattern well: the Rat is calculating and strategic, thriving on accumulated advantage; the Horse is impulsive and freedom-seeking, acting on passion and instinct. Their needs directly undercut each other's. Similarly, the methodical Ox and the dreamy, unstructured Sheep share little common ground. The fierce Tiger and clever Monkey are natural rivals. The detail-oriented Rooster and the gentle, avoidance-prone Rabbit clash on almost every practical matter. The Dragon's need to dominate sits poorly with the Dog's stubborn principles. And the refined, secretive Snake finds the Boar's blunt, transparent sincerity almost unsettling.

A Note on Using These Guides

The eto system is a tool for self-awareness and mutual understanding, not a verdict. Two people in a clash pairing who approach each other with honesty and curiosity may build something more interesting than two signs in the same triangle who never challenge each other. The triangles point toward ease and natural resonance; the clash axis points toward areas requiring deliberate effort. Both have value. The wisest use of zodiac compatibility is not to decide who to love, but to understand more clearly the patterns you bring into every relationship — and to extend that same understanding to the people around you.
